A comprehensive expansion of a traditional 1930s cottage, integrating a sensitive residential extension with two unique outbuildings. A purpose-built auxiliary building to serve as the client’s private pottery studio, alongside a minimalist cabin for guest accommodation or quiet reflection.

Situated on the edge of the Malvern Hills National Landscape, Spring Cottage is a modest 1930s dwelling set within eight acres of rolling Worcestershire grassland. The project is a sensitive response to the cottage’s status as a non-designated heritage asset, utilising a material palette of reclaimed brick and timber to ground the structure in its rural context.

The proposal replaces an expired conservatory with a high-performance modular extension, creating enhanced kitchen and living areas. Seeking a low-impact, sustainable way of life, the client is utilising the U-Build system to self-construct a home that targets whole-life zero carbon. This architectural shift will actively enhance the local ecology and future-proof the building, ensuring the home remains inextricably connected to its unique natural setting.
